Brian:  You're welcome.  I tried it now and as before it powered down nicely.
On reboot it did the bios thing and then there was a one line error across the 
top of the screen.
I didn't catch all of it but it had:
   ...  error creating sysfs ...
I'm not sure it was 'sysfs', but it was something like that.

Then the splash screen (Ubuntu with the orange/yellow/red icon on the left) 
came up.
Before getting to a login prompt, a white bar appeared, and as before the Ubuntu
splash screen got split.

Holding the power button down for a few seconds, I was able to power off.
power up.  it gets to 'starting up' and gave the error again.
it is 'sysfs'.

It booted to the prompt ok.

I seem to have the latest upgrade of everything (no icon for it and no
prompt appears).

I don't know if the 'hybernation' saved any screens - I didn't have
anything open on this round.
