The real fix for whole modern GNOMEs Hell is simple - do not use it. Remove it (for example on 20.04 LTS with https://askubuntu.com/a/1233026/66509 ) and install normal DE instead - with Caja, Dolphin, Nemo, Thunar or whatever.
