I booted into Ubuntu 18.04 with a 4.15 kernel and had similar issues. It has been running steady for several days now off the powered USB hub though so I'm pretty satisfied.
It doesn't seem like that change is relevant to this issue, although seeing as this particular interface is somewhat common I am thinking starting to think that the issue lies elsewhere.
