I am having a laptop shutdown problem also that does not appear to be heat related to me at all, so that is why I am adding to this bug report. Unlike the author of this bug report, I am running Gutsy, did a fresh install, was running Win2kSP4 prior to this install and had no heat problems at all. Screen savers worked just fine( Geforce2 Go ) in DX9 mode, GoogleEarth worked just fine in OpenGL mode as well as DX mode. ( the windoz install demonstrates to me that the laptop had no hardware issues - heat related or otherwise) . I am running a Dell Latitude C800 with 512mb ram and a Geforece2 Go video card. I have solved the shutdown problem by disabling the screen savers completely and the laptop will run for days and days with no shutdowns. Compiz desktop effects will not run on this laptop because the video card only has 32mb video memory, however as far as screen savers are concerned, all screen savers will shut down the laptop withing minutes. I decided I could live with using pictures for a screen saver, but even using the pictures folder as a screen saver shuts down the laptop. This is not a physical heat problem on two levels, prior to installing Gutsy 4 weeks ago, I ran Win2k for years and had no heat related problems and ran GoogleEarth in both DX mode and OpleGL mode. the second level is that I am placing my hand on the laptop and it is not heating up, its just shutting down even when just displaying pictures. why displaying a picture would need video acceleration puzzles me, but it never shuts off if I stay away from screen savers.
