It is not clear to me what you are trying to do and above all, does your DB contains data that you want to keep? Do you have a backup of your database in that case? Upgrading from mysql to mariadb is likely not going to work without some extra work. Please read https://mariadb.com/kb/en/upgrading-from-mysql- to-mariadb/ Also the first problem you had was upgrading MySQL so I would rather try to fix this problem first and contact MySQL team first. Finally, if your data is not important (BUT ONLY IN THAT CASE) and you want to start on a fresh MariaDB installation, I suggest you to remove the content of '/var/lib/mysql' and reinstall mariadb-server.
