Thanks for the suggestion, I can have audio output from HDMI with the
following now by playing an audio clip instead of noise:
$ sudo amixer scontrols
$ sudo amixer set Master 100 unmute
$ sudo amixer set IEC958 100 unmute
$ sudo aplay -D plughw:0,7 /var/snap/alsa-utils/common/file_example_WAV_2MG.wav
-v

Status: Incomplete => Invalid

Status: Confirmed => Invalid
