Sorry, I should've been more clear in my last comment: the vc4-fkms-v3d overlay has been present in Ubuntu Core since the first Core 18 release. Moreover, core 18's uboot.env customized stdout and stderr to "serial" only. In other words, uboot's console has *never* displayed on Core (except over serial), and even if stdout and stderr weren't customized it still wouldn't work.
