Noted that reporter no longer uses Launchpad
and there has been no activity for 11+ years.
Using Thunderbird 68.8 and Ubuntu 18.04 I was
not able to reproduce a problem following the
steps in the bug description. I used my mail
provider's webmail and Gmail to send, receive
and delete mail. No problems found, I did not
have to close and re-open Thunderbird to see
newly arrived ir deleted mail.
Marking "Incomplete" in case anyone subscribed
to the report still sees an issue.
