Thanks for getting back to me.  It's still an issue, but I've resorted to
using these commands:

ifconfig <interface> up
dhclient <interface>

I'm sure there's a way to create a script that executes these automatically
upon detecting a new hard connection that wouldn't be very hard to
implement, but I haven't looked into it.
