I decided to remove Ubuntu from my system as there was no way that I could get the mouse to work on an installed version. I have since ordered the current version, but have been too "timid" to install it as I do not want the same issues again. The only way It seems that I can get the mouse to work in Ubuntu is to run Ubuntu from the disc, which is strange as the drivers on it should be the same as the drivers on the installed version.
Perhaps someone else there could come up with a solution.
