Thanks. Yes, it would be great if texlive 2020 was in Ubuntu 20.04. But I doubt it will happen given the feature packages for 20.04 are fixed now.
I downloaded texlive-bin 2020 and tried to debuild. But I have harfbuzz 2.6.4 and there seems to be some mismatch in xetex over whether harfbuzz-icu is needed or not. The packaging files imply that all reference to harfbuzz-icu was removed in 2019, but there is code in texk/web2c/xetexdir/XeTeXLayoutInterface.cpp that if harfbuzz is greater than 2.5, then it should use harfbuzz-icu. I wonder if you can help me out of my confusion. If I get this to build well, I may be up for putting up a PPA for it.
