I forgot to mention, with the workaround I posted above: fontconfig- config will likely not uninstall cleanly if it ever comes to apt wanting to do so. Its not a major problem. I can't figure out a better way at the moment to maintain a working apt repository and fix the fonts. I'm not sure why the fontconfig packages depend on the latest version of fontconfig-config because the gutsy version (2.4.something) works just fine with 2.5.
