Also affects my desktop Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS. Took me ages because the original desktop boot disk for bionic just gave a blank monitor but here is a fix: I downloaded the boot/repair iso (https://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/) and created a bootable USB disk with the startup disk creator on another Linux box. Then I did a manual grub re-install via the terminal (didn't use the one-click rescue of the ISO): sudo -s mount /dev/sdaX /mnt grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sda
