you need to remove all old kde4 packages before installing the newer version, do a search for the kde4 packages and remove them. dpkg -l | grep "4:3.97.0" | grep '^ii' That should list them all, try with "4:3.96.0" as well to make sure you don't have anything from RC1 as well.
