In Windows and in some games, you have got the option to select the sound output.
For example, you can select headphones (auriculares in spanish) and the sound is lower to not damage your ears. The other option is to select speakers (altavoces in spanish), and in that case the sound is higher. I don't know if Ubuntu has got the same option in the kernel or if in Linux, maybe in Linux speakers and headphones are the same, and the output volume you obtain it's equal and indifferent.
