Just added irqpoll to the boot options, and it booted promptly and gave me the login screen. During the failing boot it also claimed to fail during device driver loading in the "gui-like" console output, and then dropped entirely into normal text-mode for the rest of the boot text (before going into the error message loop described in message above)
