Daniel, Today I login in (after 3 days) and all seems normal again. Very strange since 3days ago I also re-login and rebooted several times and the double icons remained. Maybe there were updates in today's login, i don't know. Whatever the problems seems to have disappeared.
Note: that I have some icons that start programs and for that to happen I did have to follow one of the treads to get it working. For me the desktop is really a pain in the bud and not an improvement compared to 18.04.
