Unfortunately this is one of those really unpleasant issues that occurred after 
leaving the game running for some time, and I have not been able to reproduce 
it - which may make it extremely difficult to fix (I have been here before with 
stuff I maintain).

The sound card is an on board one which is part of an nForce chipset.
The board is the Gigabyte GA-k8ns (not the PRO or SA model).

I hope this helps, and if I get an opportunity, I will leave starfighter
