This affect me too. /var/log/syslog fills up until my disk runs out of
space.

Steps to recreate:
- open a video in VLC
- pause the video
- suspend computer
- un-suspend computer

I see these errors in syslog:

Sep 11 19:01:04 SOL Thunar.desktop[12293]: [00007f04e809acb0] vdpau_chroma 
filter error: video mixer features failure: An invalid handle value was 
provided.
Sep 11 19:01:04 SOL Thunar.desktop[12293]: [00007f04e809acb0] vdpau_chroma 
filter error: video mixer attributes failure: An invalid handle value was 
provided.

The errors stop after closing VLC.

My .xsession-error file is very short, ~20 lines and several years old.

* VLC 3.0.8
* gpu: Nvidia GTX 970
* nvidia driver installed: 450.66
