** Summary changed:
- Broken Package - libgif-dev
+ libungif to libgif transition
** Description changed:
- I attempted to install libgif-dev so that Mplayer could use and see
- gifs. When issueing the command
+ Trying to install e.g. icedtea-java7-bin in Ubuntu Hardy fails, because
+ it Depends on libgif4, which itself conflicts with libungif4g and a
+ whole lot of programs depend on libungif4g (see aptitude search
+ '~Dlibungif4g').
- sudo apt-get install libgif-dev
+ A quick fix for this appears to be adding a "Provides: libungif4g" to
+ libgif4, but that won't work for versioned conflicts (e.g. "libungif4g
+ (>= 4.1.4)" for mplayer).
- I receive the following output
+ So, instead all packages which currently depend on libungif need to be
+ changed to depend on libgif instead.
- Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
- the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
- that package should be filed.
- The following information may help to resolve the situation:
+ (Estimated) numbers of packages, which depend on libungif4g, splitted by
"changed already in ubuntu" and "synced from debian":
+ $ aptitude search -F '%p %30V' '~Dlibungif4g' | grep -v ubuntu | wc -l
+ 45
+ $ aptitude search -F '%p %30V' '~Dlibungif4g' | grep ubuntu | wc -l
+ 36
- The following packages have unmet dependencies:
- libgif-dev: Depends: libgif4 (= 4.1.4-1) but it is not going to be installed
- E: Broken packages
- I then attempted to install the depends and was presented with the
- following screen:
-
- [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-get install libgif4 libgif-dev
- Reading package lists... Done
- Building dependency tree
- Reading state information... Done
- The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer
required:
- kubuntu-desktop kipi-plugins avahi-autoipd gtk-qt-engine libimlib2
- kdepim-wizards libungif4g
- Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
- The following packages will be REMOVED:
- kipi-plugins kubuntu-desktop libimlib2 libungif4g
- The following NEW packages will be installed:
- libgif-dev libgif4
- 0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 4 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
- Need to get 77.0kB of archives.
- After unpacking 9785kB disk space will be freed.
- Do you want to continue [Y/n]?
-
- It seems that this package is not willing to work with kubuntu.
-
- I am running fiesty 7.04 kubuntu.

+ Please note, that this already affects users in Feisty, which try to install
libgif-dev, to manually build mplayer for example (which has been the original
bug's description).
