The following information might be useful when analyzing the log file
I plugged the ethernet cable off started my computer.
Then I logged into Gnome.
At 17:12 I plugged the ethernet cable in.
The network manager didn't detect connection, although I was able to ping my
router which was 192.168.0.1, but unable to ping www.yahoo.com.
At 17: 15 I typed
sudo ifdown eth0; sudo ifup eth0

nm-applet doesn't detect that an ethernet cable is unplugged
