I've had the same experience using an Asus A8V-XE w/Via VT6102.

I have tried stopping and starting networking which failed to fetch an address 
from the dhcp server.
When I cold-boot, the network connection is re-established for a varying period 
of time.

I have now created a fixed address (not using dhcp).  I'll post the
results.
