which basically blamed the error on a gpg upgrade issue. I don't know
how to fix that.

As an experiment I created a new folder (same HDD, same partition, etc.)
to back up to. Backed up using the same passphrase as before, and the
backup occurred successfully. However, that does not mean I would be
able to recover any of the previous backups. Hope that helps.
