I moved /etc/pulse/ and reinstalled pulseaudio.  Now the "Sound
Settings" applet looks correct, but still sound is not working.  The
PulseAudio volume control simply says "Establishing connection to
PulseAudio. Please wait...".  This is what mplayer says:
