Tested Ubuntu 20.04 (kernel 5.4.0-52-generic) with the old HP Pavilion
dv6 laptop and the bug seems to still exist.

Disabling the Plymouth boot screen fixes this bug (changing
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT from "quiet splash" to "quiet" in
/etc/default/grub).

Also closing and opening the laptop lid after boot turns the display
back on.
