Disabling the (execute disable bit) xd bit in bios and disabling the
virtual machine options in bios appears to greatly have improved these
issues (at least for now) there arent many bios options on this
motherboard (including none at all for the ram) and at present I am not
sure which of these has improved the situation, but, it seems much
improved.

This particular pc seems to use excessive memory using most kernals,
compared to my other 2 computers running mint 18.3, this seems to have
helped quite a bit (at least for now).

I have also tried different memory sticks, just in case, with no
improvement.

Previously this machine was sometimes using the full 4 gb of ram within
an hour and not correctly releasing the memory when quitting programs,
it then slowed to virtually a stop.

At the moment I have a few things open including my browser and still
have 2.7 gb of memory free still, after, just under 4 1/2 hours, so, on
the face of it, it seems to have improved, I have also reverted to
kernal 4.13.0-32.

Not sure if any of this info is of any use, but, this seems to have
helped my situation and has made this pc usable now.
