I have a SONY Vaio VGN FS 640/W and have the same problem. This is my parents laptop so I need a fix (scripted or permanent) ASAP, cause I don't want this to be a deal breaker for them.
Is there any way I can script it to do the front mic / mic switch on boot, till a permanent fix is found? Let me know if there is any other information I can provide.
