Since updating to Ubuntu 20.04, I have lots of problems with sound input
and output coming from the wrong device or even a device that is not
turned on. For example, right now in gnome-control-center sound settings
it recognizes three sound output devices - internal speakers, HDMI
output and a wireless headset. The wireless headset is off and the HDMI
has no speakers, but I am using a HDMI->VGA adapter that gives it the
impression that there may be speakers. In gnome-control-center, I have
set the internal audio to be both the input and output devices for
sound. When I click on the button to test audio output, no sound is
produced, but if I have pavucontrol open at the same time, I can see
that it is trying to send the sound output to the wireless speakers
despite the settings in gnome-control-center.
Similarly, if I try to do a video conference, such as skype, sound input
and output are almost always wrong. Right now, if I try skype, it will
only use the headset speaker and microphone, though it will make the
phone ringing sound using the internal speaker. Again, this happens
regardless of what I configure the sound settings to be in the skype
settings panel.
With many other video conferencing applications I have similar problems.
With some, I manage to go into pavucontrol and manually set the
appropriate devices for input and output, but for others I am often
forced to use the headset regardless of whether I want to or not.
I have a number of colleagues that report similar issues when trying to
use video conferencing software with Ubuntu.
