What about the virtual-terminal problem mentioned above which I have
quoted below?

"On a Toshiba Satellite M70 with an X700 adding the line

Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,AUTO"

to xorg.conf does solve the blank screen problem, but when switching to
a virtual terminal with ctrl-alt-f1, the screen gets corrupted
(different shades of vertical lines). When I switch back with ctrl-
alt-f7, the screen is still corrupted."
