I have the same problem with the Lenovo S740. Brightness hotkeys not working at all. I've tried several options as stated in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Backlight#Kernel_command-line_options Using acpi_backlight=vendor totally break the backlight, it cannot be changed even from the gnome panel.
