I strongly suspect that this is some issue with the IDE controller;
though I don't know what.  If you still have the July 27 version lying
around, could you copy the kernel and initrd only off and try booting
with  that kernel but with upstart; and see if that does the same thing?


Have added a new bug task for the kernel people to look at.

Ben: reboot (which is just code copied from sysvinit) iterates /proc/ide
and performs the  HDIO_DRIVE_CMD ioctl with WIN_STANDBYNOW1 then
WIN_STANDBYNOW2 on the /dev node of any disks it finds there.

If it does that, the disk spins down, then when reboot(RB_HALT_SYSTEM)
is called, it spins back up again briefly, before spinning down.

vm/block_dump doesn't reveal any reason for this.

And as the poster says, this is chipset specific
