Public bug reported:

The ubuntu packaged version of gummi is almost unusable since the editor
area hangs on keyboard and mouse every several seconds, for about 10
seconds. However, it is still possible to use the rest of the
application (menus, ...) with the mouse pointer.

A workaround is to click on "save" menu action every time it hangs. Then
hanging is relaxed for the next seconds, which allow one ton continue to
type a few words.
