I am now able to reproduce this behaviour. Booting to blackscreen (after LUKS encryption) only occurs with an unplugged power adapter and NOT with a plugged one. With Ubuntu 18.04.5 (Kernel is the same 5.4.0-56, but complaining about missing amdgpu renoir drivers) the problem in my tests did NEVER occur. But the boot process with an unplugged power adapter is way more slower than with a plugged one. I have absolutely no clue about this behaviour. boot logs are not really helpful (at least with my understanding)
