Public bug reported:

It is not possible to receive mail using the POP3 protocol if the server 
supports the UTF8 Unicode capability. It is required to remove the flag to the 
"Enable UTF-8 Extension, when the server supports it" option in server 
configuration.
The problem seems to be that Evolution sends the following commands to the POP3 
server:

CAPA
UTF8USER loginname
PASS password

As you can see, there is a missing newline after the UTF8 command.

I verified this by sniffing the traffic at both client and server sides,
with SSL disabled.
