What I did:
I just installed Ubuntu 20.04.1 and selected the Autologin option during the
installation process.
What I expected:
I expected to need the password exclusively for administrative operations.
What I got instead:
Instead, once the screensaver went up the screen lock was present and the
password was required.
Alternative solution:
To disable the locking is very easy in the Settings/Privacy/Screen lock,
there's no problem with how to do it.
What I propose:
When the Autologin is selected in Ubiquity (during Ubuntu installation),
Ubiquity should also switch off the screen lock in the screensaver options.
Discussion:
I see two cases:
1) the user selected the Autologin and did not encrypt the hard drive. Clearly
the user considers that local security is not a risk in its environment and
expects to not be asked the password often. The actual security provided by the
screen lock is very limited as rebooting the machine is enough to access all
the (saved) data. In this case Ubiquity should disable the screen lock in the
screensaver options.
2) the user selected the Autologin and encrypted the hard drive. This is a
perfectly meaningful choice (which I suppose is available, I did not try, but I
don't think it is common?). In this case the screen lock in the screensaver
options should be preserved and Ubiquity should be able to recognize this
situation.
