I can confirm this. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/147242 also
appears to be the same problem. In my case, none of the various
solutions being tossed around launchpad or in the forums has worked
(e.g., remove the "virtual" line from xorg.conf, because I don't have
one to begin with). My login screen resolution is 1600x1024 (the
initially selected resolution in Gutsy, but not in prior releases),
which is not a supported resolution by my monitor, and it's very clearly
upset when that resolution is forced (colors are very bad, CRT makes
noise). My only solution has been to auto-login and minimize the time
spent in that resolution. Reconfiguring the xserver using dpkg-
reconfigure did not help, nor did removing everything except 1600x1200
(my preferred resolution) from xorg.conf, but then 1600x1024 was never
present so I'm not sure where that value came from anyway. There are
now several forum threads about this problem as well, although the
details seem to differ somewhat (e.g., which resolution is assigned to
the login screen). I think, but am not certain, that everyone is stuck
with the login screen at whatever resolution Ubuntu initially chose.

Regarding the screen shot problem, that appears to the same as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/130933. I'm not
running Compiz, so I can't comment on it personally.
