As I remember, when I made the original bug report direct rendering was being
disabled when I applied gamma settings in admin mode. To reproduce this on
Gutsy I followed a similar procedure as then.

1: I opened monitor and display in System settings.
2: I entered administrator mode.
3: I set the gamma spinbox (all) to 0.50
4: I applied the settings
5: I restarted the computer

The things I noticed are as follows:

When the computer restarted,

The login screen now boasted a lesser resolution. (It was 1280 * 1024)
It is now 1024*768 or lower.

The values I selected when I changed gamma as admin was applied at the
login window but not after login. (After login the values I had applied
before without admin mode were used.)

A resolution I disabled (1600*1200) plus another weird one (1792*1344)
were added in monitor and display in System settings.

And the default gamma now (on the color and Gamma tab), instead of 1.00
is now 0.50; the value I applied when I set the values in admin mode.

But direct rendering was still enabled. I checked this by running
glxinfo in konsole and checking an opengl screen saver.

So it seems changing gamma in Administrator mode no longer disables
direct rendering.

By the way, this here is just a little quirk I checked out before I went about
checking direct rendering.

When applying gamma settings in system settings without administrator
mode the gamma settings hold. Also on the computer restart the gamma
settings are reapplied as soon as you log in. However should you go back
to monitor and display on the color and gamma tab and select the option
to manually adjust red green or blue the gamma settings reset (onscreen)
to 1.00 on all values; without the option to apply or reset. Also should
you adjust the spin box on the all setting and close the window without
saving, the default 1.00 is applied. On both of these occasions the 1.00
settings are temporay and revert to your personal settings on xserver
restart.
