Hello,
I tried the Hardy 2.6.24.1 kernel as per your instructions

1) edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and add the following line:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy main restricted

2) sudo apt-get update
3) sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic
4) reboot and select the new kernel from the grub menu

Kernel installed ok, I was unable to find the
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.25.1 & nvidia-glx-new packages with
synaptic.
The bug only seems to occur when running on 2 cores with the Nvidia
driver, so I need these to test the for the bug.

I used the ENVY script to compile the nvidia driver & kernal modules
from source.

X all set up fine & run with compiz, untill the old problem reoccured.
Very hard lock up unable to kill X etc.

Unfortunately it loosk like the new kernel is not a fix.

Gone back to running the 2.6.22.14-386 kernel on single core. No
problems other than a slow machine.
BTW debian stable runs fine on 2 cores.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if i can help further.
Regards
jim
