I have the same problems with a Thinkpad T61 and the same graphics adapter. My screen is a Samsung SyncMaster 243T. When connected on the dvi port of the dock, I get the signal out of range message as soon as gdm should appear. I can login blindly and get to gnome, but that's not too elegant. After fiddling around with xorg.conf I connected an analog cable to the monitor to watch, if there may be something going on while the dvi signal is out of range. So I plug in the vga cable and at next boot I get a full resolution gdm over the dvi cable! I didn't set up the vga connection as second monitor or something like this, I simply plugged in the vga cable. With both cables connected, everything works fine.
