My laptop was showing these symptoms. It's a HP DV6645us bought only 2
months ago on Oct 10th. I just recently installed Ubuntu and stumbled
upon this article with only 9 hours of uptime. So I feel as I have
lucked out. This is a very harmful bug though and needs to be
incorporated into the automatic software updates somehow. I am a linux
semi-noob and this one truly scared me.

  9 Power_On_Hours 0x0012 099 099 000 Old_age Always
     866

This shows a rate of almost 100 cycles per hour. My disk's total load
cycle count is only 24,617, considering this is from only 2 months of
use and 9 hrs of gutsy gibbon uptime I am very thankful Gilles Schintgen
discovered this bug.
