Brian,

I do agree with you... it seems that hdparm has no effect on my HD APM
settings.

To answer your questions, I think I'm using well hdparm -- I fixed the
click problem of a friend computer by this way -- and the Samsung tool
is working (I used 2 differents version, both on bootable CD's).

So your advice to contact hdparm team to see if they know about that
issue is my best solution, as you said.

Thanks a lot for these discussions, and keep the pressure on the Ubuntu
team in order to manage this problem in a better/safer way than now (and
by default). Unfortunatly, I think this bug cause(d) prejudices to
Ubuntu distribition, even if it is not specific to it... more and more
people using Linux (and especially Ubuntu), went to this world to see
"the other side" with "windows skills" and do not want to spend time
with the many hand settings to do in their computer (it is not my case
;) ): they just want a "ready to use solution without configuration".
And it was a goal of Ubuntu : attrack more people from other OS to Linux
world, showing them it is a serious option ! They may be disapointed by
such big problem and "never" come back to Linux !
