Note:

in exploring the issue as I wrote the initial report.. I opened
Desktop.Settings (right click background with aim of selecting another
wallpaper)

I'm now getting lots of black flashes on the box... which look like
graphics issues with the nvidia card.. (nouveau related?) I'd
normally `sudo lshw -C video` to look, however..

The system is now rather unstable, and keeps pausing???

eg. I have a terminal open, if i hit "gggg" quickly, i can then count
"1234" (sometimes reaching 12 or 20) before I see those letters appear
in konsole...

Something is up now, and it's not just a wallpaper issue.
(I'll quit now.. it's getting slower & I can't get it to even complete a `sudo
dmesg` to explore ....)

I may need to return to this later.. for now I'll leave it as no
wallpaper ... SysRq REISUB works so kernel is good
