Public bug reported: Laptop 512mb RAM ATI Radeon Express 200M 1.6ghz CPU
I have a fresh installation of gutsy (7.10). The only things done were: a) enable wireless card b) enabled graphics card c) enabled compiz d) general firefox use (note that this problem occurs both when compiz is enabled and disabled, so it's probably not related to that) These three things were done automatically through their respected interfaces, and no problems arose. My problem is this: If Ubuntu goes into a screensaver/powersave mode, I'm able to return by moving the mouse, but nothing in the system will load. Menus work, but if I select a program/folder, nothing happens. Eventually it will become completley non-responsive and I have to force- reboot by holding down the power button. When the screensaver is enabled, it simply doesn't work; the screen goes black, but isn't disabled and it is still "lit up," just black. When I completely disable the screensaver and power-save options (through the GUI), the system still puts up the black screen after about 15 minutes, and the same problem happens. There's no way to stop it from going 'idle'. Also related: When I switch users or do ctrl + alt + backspace, I'm brought to a blue screen with large, scrambled text. It says something about being unable to load the x server, it's difficult to read. After this I'm unable to do anything; no keys or mouse movements are accepted. I have to force- reboot. The bluescreen/screensaver errors didn't always happen, it just showed up one day; it was not directly after any changes however. As this happens every time my computer is idle for more than 15 minutes, I'm getting nearly annoyed enough to switch back to Windows. My experience thus far is that Ubuntu "just doesn't work." Any help would be appreciated. P.S. I've tried: Disable/Enabling/Updating compiz Disabling/Re-enabling/Updating ATI drivers (via restricted drivers interface) ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Screensaver/Powermode Crashes Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/176499 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
