Tormod, I have to back-up on my statement because installation is misleading ; I investigated the bug on Internet and found the fix ; I had to remove the package xserver-xgl though not described by the installator as incompatible with driver "radeon" as provided with package xserver-xorg-video-ati.
After doing so and rebooting I had as with Feisty my radeon driver working with or without compiz with metacity decorator ; it looks even faster than proprietary driver "fglrx" which might not be still true with the new Catalyst drivers not yet packaged ; kde decoartor does not work cleanly but it can be used.
