Sounds kind of like https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome- shell/-/issues/3571 although the root cause of that one does not exist in GNOME 3.38. And in the end it was closed because the new design of GNOME 40 makes the issue hardly noticeable. So this is probably a "Won't Fix" bug, but we can leave it open for other people to find.
