I had this problem (delay of 2 minutes when booting with splash) in Gutsy gibbon kubuntu. Removing splash from the kernel parameters did help. However, editing /etc/usplash.conf to match my screen resolution to 1280x800 and keeping the splash parameter helped as well... (It was set at 1280x1024 after installation.) Perhaps this helps solving the problem which doesn't seem to occur that often, considering the amount of bugreports?!
