Further to comment #9  (with the idea of work-around) I initial-booted
the thumb-drive (installation media) but by editing the grub entry (so
instead of booting it normally; it booted the installed (sda1) system
instead using `chainloader (hd1)+1`)

and my installed version booted.

I ejected the thumb-drive and tried to grub-install but get

guiverc@dc7700:~$ sudo grub-install /dev/sda
[sudo] password for guiverc: 
Installing for i386-pc platform.
grub-install: warning: this GPT partition label contains no BIOS Boot 
Partition; embedding won't be possible.
grub-install: warning: Embedding is not possible.  GRUB can only be installed 
in this setup by using blocklists.  However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and 
their use is discouraged..
grub-install: error: will not proceed with blocklists.

I'm fearful this won't boot... so no workaround..
