I have the same issue on Ubuntu 18.04 after upgrading from Xenial last
week, but using the Xenial kernel (4.4.0-171-generic). It worked fine
before the upgrade. The kernel log shows a kernel oops: a warning
followed by a general protection fault, both in the i915 code. Since I'm
still on the Xenial kernel it must be the userspace driver update that
causes the issue. I've attached the full kernel log.
