@Sebastien, the 1.9 series is really just an evolutionary change to the 1.8 
series, I can't see any breaking changes or something like that, and with 1.9.1 
you get the latest and greatest bug fixes (see 
https://www.doxygen.nl/manual/changelog.html).
But if you want to avoid a minor version change, 1.8.20 will solve the problem 
as well.

the attached example project contains some doxygen formulas
(data_handling.md).

Run "doxygen" in the example's main folder, with latex and ghostview
installed. It should stop inside a gs error prompt as mentioned in the
issue I linked in my opening post.
