Hi Harry,
thanks for the testcase, this indeed looks interesting.

virtiofsd is still rather new and growing extra features/fixes all the
time. The jump from qemu 5.0 -> 5.2 also had plenty of changes there,
maybe you'd hit one of those and this might (eventually) be a bug in the
recent upstream.

Qemu 6.0 for Ubuntu 21.10 isn't ready yet to try it there. But we don't
apply any delta in regard to virtiofsd yet, so this case might become an
upstream issue. Let me ask up front, have you had a chance to
try/evaluate this with latest upstream qemu or at least upstream
virtiofsd already? Because if it happens there as well we might be
better off filing the bug at [1] and only tracking and backporting it
here.

[2]: defines xattr/no_xattr for a while now and I assume you have
explicitly set it to enabled. It might be useful to share how "exactly"
you manually (commandline) or via libvirt (XML) configured your
virtiofsd.

Recently with qemu 5.2 the xattr mapping options were added and maybe
therein is a reason but also a way to change behavior as you need it.
Have you had a look at [3] already and tried if that could help your
case to work again?

That much from reading the case, trying to recreate this now ...
